The monuments of Florence: a world of marble and sculptures
The cradle of the Renaissance and a veritable open-air museum: in Florence, artistic wonders await around every corner. The best way to see it all is undoubtedly a walking tour with an experienced guide. Visit the Cathedral Complex and its monuments clad in polychrome marble: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore topped by the Brunelleschi Dome; the Baptistry of San Giovanni; and Giotto's Campanile, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. Continue to the Church of Orsanmichele, which started life as a granary and was consecrated for Christian worship in the mid-14th century. Head to the Mercato Nuovo with its lucky pig statue and then the Piazza della Signoria, where you can admire the sculptural masterpieces of the Loggia dei Lanzi and the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, with its iconic crenellated tower. Next door is the Uffizi Gallery, one of the largest art museums in the world, home to Botticelli's Birth of Venus. Step inside and wander through the different rooms to see all the masterpieces on display: from Giotto to Piero della Francesca, and from Leonardo to Raphael, Caravaggio and Michelangelo. An immersive experience to get a privileged glimpse into the splendour of Florence.
