About

About the area

Sandwiched between the sea and the mountains, Massa and Carrara are twin cities with parallel lives. They are united by the embrace of the Apuan Alps, which dominate the landscape with their sharp peaks: they are the source of the white marble used by Michelangelo and the great sculptors. The quarries from which the blocks are extracted resemble enormous geometric cathedrals, which can also be reached by following pedestrian and cycle paths. Carrara has a medieval soul, with the Romanesque purity of the Cathedral, the palace-fortress of the Cybo-Malaspina family and the fourteenth-century Casa Rapetti. Massa has the noble face of the capital of an independent state until the 19th century, with the Palazzo Ducale marked by the memory of Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon's sister who governed it for nine years. The ancient center surmounted by the magnificent Malaspina Castle alternates squares and harmonious avenues in which the fifteenth-century Cathedral of Saints Francis and Peter stands out. Not far away on the coast, Marina di Massa has the allure of an aristocratic beach and remains an elegant resort, dotted with Art Nouveau villas. Massa and Carrara make up a single province that extends along the Lunigiana valley. A beautiful and green land, where you can discover fascinating villages: Fivizzano, a treasure chest of monuments and Pontremoli, characteristic in its network of rivers and bridges. There are itineraries for enthusiasts of any sport that branch out from the slopes of the Apuan Alps: the Via dell'Uva runs along terraced hills full of vineyards that stretch down to the coast and is an opportunity to taste the fragrant Candia DOC wine. The cuisine of this northern part of Tuscany has delicious and distinctive recipes: testaroli, tagliolini in beans, tortelli with meat sauce, rice cake and the delicious Colonnata lard, matured in marble.
