About

About the area

Taranto is a surprise. Two cities in one, with a vitality and a wealth of monuments that reveal the most authentic Apuglia. First there is the old part, where palaces incorporate the majestic temples of the colony founded by the Spartans: a maze of alleys and churches with a timeless allure. In the evenings, the narrow streets are filled with the tables of lively trattorias and bars, with the dishes of a culinary tradition that makes simple flavours magnificent. Here, the famous mussels dominate the menu, along with fresh fish from the boats that dock in the small harbour a few metres away. The mighty Aragonese Castle dominates the entrance to the Mare Piccolo, the stretch of water where the military fleet moors: visits are also possible at night, to discover the medieval heart of the fortress and the history of the city. Having crossed the bridge - which is opened for the transit of ships - enter the geometric patterns of the twentieth-century city together with the 'struscio', the evening stroll along the wide avenues of shops and bars for aperitifs with panzerotti, fried pizza rolls. Make haste to MarTa, one of the most beautiful archaeological museums in Italy, where the remains of the Greek Taranto that dominated the Mediterranean are collected, including statues of extraordinary beauty. But the city is also surrounded by golden beaches, with pine forests and eucalyptus groves behind them offering gentle shade to bathers. A place worth discovering and an unforgettable stay.
