Tropea Italy

They called it the Coast of the Gods because the beauty here is such that the gods chose it as their home. Fifty-five kilometres of Calabrian enchantment amid long white beaches, rocky cliffs, crystal clear sea and a pearl: Tropea. Medieval towers and aristocratic palaces set into the cliff look out over the blue sea like a giant terrace, across the way is Isola Bella, home to the Church of Santa Maria dell'Isola, a sanctuary that has become a symbol of Calabria around the world with its steps carved out of the rock. A magical hermitage to be enjoyed. Legend has it that it was Hercules, returning from Spain, who founded Tropea. The town retains traces of history, first its key role in Roman times, and then with the Normans and the Aragonese. The 12th-century cathedral with its three naves was built entirely of tufa and lava stone, later transformed into the Baroque style and remodelled several times to repair earthquake damage. Today, it has two fascinating Gothic portals, and inside it houses an icon by a pupil of Giotto and a majestic black crucifix. Here, the grace of nature is combined with art and history. A combination that enchants: you need only to walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele with the doorways and decorations of the 18th- and 19th-century buildings and then stop at the Balconata, the overhanging lookout point with a view of the sea that fades from turquoise to deep blue and of the Aeolian Islands just a stone’s throw away. And then you can get lost in a labyrinth of narrow streets, with farmers' shops where you can taste the products of the land, such as the red onion, already known in the time of Pliny the Elder and appreciated for its sweetness and renowned therapeutic and purifying properties. And finally, the beaches: kilometres long, absolutely white, and guardians of spectacular caves. Between myth and reality to grasp divine beauty.
