Grand Tour of Italy

Grand Tour of Italy

Description

Nine days for a journey into the soul of Italy, with the same fascination of discovery that has prompted writers and musicians to travel the roads of the Peninsula from Milan to Naples, passing through Florence and Rome: four capitals that have marked history. It is the Grand Tour, the synthesis of art and wonder.

Accommodation in 4-star hotels in the historic centre of each city, in a double room with breakfast included, for a journey into the essence of Italianness.

Milan is a city where wealth has always been synonymous with elegance: the nation's economic engine has, over the centuries, created its own style, reflected in architecture, art, fashion, and cuisine.

The historical centre has retained its Renaissance dimensions, with the waterways of the Navigli and narrow streets where clothes and design shops are now located.

The Duomo is a magnificent Gothic cathedral: on the roof you can see the spires merging with the peaks of the Alps.

Not far away, the Castello Sforzesco is an authentic medieval fortress, housing collections of paintings and sculptures, while the Pinacoteca di Brera houses unique masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, Raphael and Caravaggio. The main attraction remains Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, a fresco surrounded by legendary stories.

Milan is to be experienced through its rituals, such as the evening aperitif at the tables of clubs, or in restaurants that know how to mix Lombard tradition with cosmopolitan flavours. But it is also a venue for events – design week or fashion shows – where every street is transformed into an open-air exhibition.

Florence is the capital of the Renaissance and its historic centre lets you immerse yourself in the greatest manifestations of art: from Santa Maria Novella to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti.

It is also the place where geniuses such as Dante Alighieri and Leonardo da Vinci lived and where the quantity of masterpieces, housed in the Uffizi for example, surpasses all imagination.

Here you can wander through timeless backstreets, crossing the Arno River on the Ponte Vecchio, where goldsmiths' workshops continue a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages.

Or you can explore routes that combine nature and landscape, such as the Boboli Gardens, a delight of the Medici dynasty, and the San Minato hill, with its church offering a magnificent view of the entire city and the Arno River.

Rome is History. Each street reflects the passage of millennia, marked by the monuments of man and the aspirations of eternity of a thousand churches, up to the magnificence of St. Peter's and its dome.

It is impossible to list the wealth of art and archaeology, from the Colosseum to the Vatican Museums, from the Pantheon to the Capitol, from the Baths of Caracalla to the Trevi Fountain.

Visiting

Day 1: The treasures of Milan
Day 1: The treasures of Milan

After arrival at Milan airport, you will transfer with a private chauffeur to your accommodation in a 4-star hotel in the city centre, in a double room. Thanks to its central location, you can easily reach the city's most famous sights on your own: the Duomo with its Gothic façade and the statue of the Madonnina that protects the city from above, the Castello Sforzesco with its imposing walls, the unique masterpieces of Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Caravaggio and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, preserved in the Cenacolo di Santa Maria delle Grazie and which can be visited by reservation. Also worth seeing are the Navigli, the city's canals, the centre of nightlife, but also a place for shopping and creativity, with its many ateliers, workshops and studios. And then you can appreciate the rituals of Milan such as the aperitif, for example in the nearby Via Ticinese, one of the most authentic and multi-ethnic streets in Milan, also listed by the New York Times as one of the 12 most beautiful streets in Europe.

Day 2: Milan, where fashion is born
Day 2: Milan, where fashion is born

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and, thanks to its central location, a walk through the historic centre. Milan is the capital of fashion, a creative laboratory in constant ferment. Here, designers have always turned the catwalks into stages for new trends, making the city a mecca for trendsetters, businesses and influencers. To immerse yourself in style and beauty, head to Brera with its Pinacoteca (art museum), cafés and elegant bars. Explore the food shops and luxury boutiques and head towards Corso Como to admire the shop windows and art galleries. Then venture into Milan's new architectural complex: the Unicredit skyscrapers and Piazza Gae Aulenti, as well as the renowned Vertical Forest, which has won numerous international awards and stands out recognisably in the skyline.

Included experience: 'Fashion tour in Milan amid style and glamour'

Depending on your agreed time, meet with an experienced guide for a private tour of the city's most glamorous spots. Stroll through Piazza della Scala, home to Milan's most famous theatre, and arrive in Via Manzoni and Via Montenapoleone, the temple of fashion. Continue along Via Della Spiga and Corso Venezia, then Via Sant'Andrea with a visit to Palazzo Morando, which houses the Costume Fashion Image Museum. Conclude with a gourmet stop by enjoying a slice of artisanal Panettone or Amor Polenta, a local cornmeal cake shaped like a trunk, accompanied by coffee, cappuccino or fruit juice at the well-known Prada-Marchesi pastry shop, founded in 1894.

Day 3: From Milan to Florence in pursuit of the Renaissance
Day 3: From Milan to Florence in pursuit of the Renaissance

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and transfer with a private chauffeur to the train station to continue the journey to Florence. You will travel on a high-speed train, watching the Po Valley and the Apennines from the window. After arrival at the station in Florence, you will be accompanied by private chauffeur to your accommodation in a 4-star hotel in the historic centre, in a double room. Thanks to its central location, you can comfortably stroll through the capital of the Renaissance and encounter masterpieces and beauty at every turn. You can admire the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella with its Renaissance façade designed by Leon Battista Alberti, and walk among the works it houses inside, such as Giotto's Crucifix, Masaccio's Trinity, and frescoes by Filippino Lippi and Ghirlandaio. Or, depending on the crowd, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with Brunelleschi's Dome, symbol of the Renaissance around the world, Giotto's Bell Tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni. There is also the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the oldest in Florence, Piazza della Signoria and the Basilica of Santa Croce, with its polychrome marble-clad façade. To complete a day of art, you can visit the Accademia Gallery, where you can contemplate the genius and power of Michelangelo's works: from the David, his most famous work, to the Prigioni and the San Matteo. Before returning to the hotel, treat yourself to bruschetta, pappa al pomodoro, ribollita and Chianina beef in a typical restaurant in the historic centre.

Day 4: Florence, refreshment for the soul

Enter the workshops of local craftsmen to admire artefacts, engravings, art prints, enamels, and silver objects. Continue to Piazza Santo Spirito, with its family-run restaurants, shops and the church of the same name designed by Brunelleschi.

To round off a day in the heart of art, we recommend that you visit Palazzo Pitti, residence of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and today a museum with works by Raphael and Titian.

You can also reserve a ticket to visit the Uffizi, with Botticelli's Venus and masterpieces by Raphael and Michelangelo.

Before returning to the hotel, you can comfortably make your way to the Tiber Island, the only urban island on the Tiber, and from there to the Jewish Ghetto, whose streets recount centuries of community life, racism and segregation, but also the struggle and resilience of a people in the name of human rights.

Day 6: A day in the Eternal City
Day 6: A day in the Eternal City

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Thanks to its convenient location, you can visit the most important historical sites in Rome on your own, taking a step-by-step tour through more than 2,700 years of history, including archaeological evidence, romantic landscapes, myths and legends. Starting at the Baths of Caracalla, built between 212 and 216 AD, then on to the Circus Maximus, where chariot races were held in front of more than 150,000 spectators. Stop under the portico of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin with its Bocca della Verità, the marble mask that, according to legend, bites the hand of the lying person. After a well-deserved break in a typical restaurant to enjoy every bite of the harmony that made history, move on to the shopping streets: Via del Corso, Via Veneto, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta. After sipping an authentic Italian espresso, experience the immortal beauty that has captivated film directors from all over the world, from Federico Fellini to Woody Allen. Leisurely admire the Eternal City from the Appia Antica to the Colosseum, the symbol of gladiators and ancient Rome, then continue from Trinità dei Monti to Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona, one of the most characteristic urban complexes of Baroque Rome.

Included experience: 'Rome in an Ape Calessino amid charm and history'

At sunset, meet up with a private driver aboard an Ape Calessino through the heart of the capital: observe the historical and architectural masterpieces that follow one another and head to the Belvedere del Gianicolo, the city's most beautiful terrace.

You can toast to the panorama and its 3,000 years of history that never gets old.

Its centrality makes it possible for you to stroll freely around the city, discovering the most famous sights: Piazza Plebiscito, the meeting place of Naples, the Galleria Umberto I and the San Carlo, the oldest opera house in the world. And then there is Via Toledo, the backbone of the city, and the Quartieri Spagnoli, a grid built by the then Viceroy Pedro de Toledo to quarter the military garrisons, today an expression of Neapolitan veracity. Don't forget San Gregorio Armeno to learn about the world-famous art of the Neapolitan nativity scene and, finally, the Treasure of San Gennaro kept in the Cathedral.
