Bologna tour: where art meets history
Home to the longest portico and the oldest university in the western world, this mediaeval city is no stranger to records. There is no question about it: Bologna is best explored on foot. Start in Piazza Porta Ravegnana under the Two Towers, the symbols of the city, and venture into the maze of ancient alleys alongside an expert guide. Reach Piazza Maggiore, which singer Lucio Dalla called "Piazza Grande", home to a famous statue of Neptune. Then visit the Basilica of San Petronio, patron saint of Bologna, which houses the world's longest sundial and the Chapel of the Magi. Afterwards, immerse yourself in the market, and enjoy a delicious tasting of typical savoury products in a historic shop. In the early afternoon, stop at the Church of Santa Maria della Vita, home to the "Lamentation over the Dead Christ" by Niccolò dell'Arca and the abbey complex of the seven churches of Santo Stefano. Finish in the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, once the main building of the University of Bologna, which earned the city the nickname of La Dotta, "the learned one". A remarkable experience immersed in the beauty of the city.
