About

About the area

Lucca has always been a capital, first of the Republic and then, by Napoleon's will, of a principality that he assigned to his sister Elisa, bringing together all the magnificence of a great city in a small space. That is why entering the enclosure of the mighty 16th-century ramparts turns into a continuous surprise: palaces, churches, and squares all speak to the wealth and industriousness of this city. The most famous spot is the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, which traces the shape of the Roman theatre below with the arena surrounded by buildings built above the tiers of seats. San Michele surmounted by the statue of the Archangel Michael is one of the most beautiful and famous Romanesque works in Tuscany. The façade of the cathedral, dedicated to St Martin, is a weave of elegant columns with bas-reliefs by Tuscan masters. One of the most fascinating statues of the 15th century is housed in the sacristy: the funeral monument of Ilaria del Carretto, which depicts in polished marble the softness of her features and the splendour of her clothes. Not to be missed is the colossal mosaic on the exterior of San Frediano, with the ascension of Christ and the apostles, reminiscent of the Byzantine artists active in the Peninsula. The Guinigi Tower, with a forest on top, predates the skyscrapers of today's starchitects. Lucca should not be merely “visited”: it is a city to be lived in, breathing in the slow rhythm of its car-free streets, a stroll along the tree-lined ramparts, the restaurants with their open-air tables and Tuscan delicacies, the refined shops and craft workshops. Every summer, the Summer Festival welcomes the biggest names in rock, from the Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan to the city’s medieval squares for extraordinary concerts. And all the great artists from every nation compete to perform in this city, which offers inimitable emotions.
