Lecce Italy

Lecce is monumental and vital. It has the pride of a capital city, sculpted in the yellow limestone that colours its façades in gold: it even has its own style, the Lecce Baroque, combining Spanish models and Renaissance legacies with the creativity of local masters. It can be admired in the Cathedral and especially in the Basilica of Santa Croce, with its rose window that seems to be embroidered in stone. The maze of squares and alleys amplifies the magic of discovering churches and baronial residences, which stand imposingly at the end of tiny streets. The majestic Castle of Emperor Charles V is now used to host exhibitions. The remains of the Roman amphitheatre, 8 metres below the level of the present city and dominated by the column of the Patron Saint Oronzo, testify to how ancient its history is. But Lecce is full of the joy of the Salento, with aperitif and dinner tables that turn into popular parties every night. Even in winter, because the climate here is extraordinarily mild. The cuisine is simple and tasty, from pucce - special bread with tuna, capers and vegetables - to earthy dishes like rolled lasagne, or seafood dishes like octopus in pignatta. An unparalleled olive oil, the fruit of centuries-old trees, stands out above it all. Don't miss the pasticciotto, the typical creamy desert. And the wines of the region – whites, rosés and reds – have been able to temper the strength of the sunny vineyards with delicate aromas and savoury bouquets.
